The Capital Region of New York is home to many wonderful golf courses and country clubs, offering opportunities for golfers of all skill levels to enjoy the game in a beautiful setting. Although a shorter season than many downstate golf courses, the Capital Region offers access to some of the most scenic and challenging golf courses and country clubs in New York State.
The Capital Region was blessed with many classic golf courses that were built during the 1920's, while the area was experiencing an economic boom after World War One. Many of the most famous golf architects of the time including Donald Ross, Walter Travis, Devereux Emmet and Robert Trent Jones engaged in course design and development throughout the region and across New York State. The 1990's and 2000's also saw a golf course boom in the United States and locally, as well.
The golfing season in the Capital District runs from early April until mid to late November with an occasional early start in March. Prime golf season is May through October. Greens fees at many of the public courses in the area are priced very reasonably. There are many local golf tournaments including the Tri-County Match Play, Troy Invitational, Schenectady Classic, Saratoga County Championship and New York State Golf Association tournaments as well as many charity tournaments.
