Easy Walks & Family-Friendly Trails
Looking for something shorter or more beginner-friendly? These are popular choices for casual walkers, families with children, or anyone easing into hiking:
Indian Ladder area at Thacher State Park – Shorter routes near the nature center and overlook provide big views without a long hike; parts of the Indian Ladder Trail involve stairs and cliffs, so check conditions and closures before you go.
Geyser Creek & Springs loops at Saratoga Spa State Park – Gentle paths past mineral springs, boardwalk sections and small bridges; especially nice for strolls in spring and fall.
Short loops at Five Rivers – Well-signed, relatively flat paths through fields, woods and around ponds—excellent for kids, school groups and birders.
Bender Melon Farm Preserve – Well-signed, relatively flat paths through fields and woods. Intersects with the Albany County Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail.
Pine Bush loop trails – Several trailheads offer 1–3 mile loops on mostly gentle terrain, with sandy footing and open pine barrens landscapes.
Peebles Island perimeter trail – A scenic loop with river views and minimal elevation change; popular for short walks and picnics.
Trail conditions, access, parking fees and regulations can change. Before heading out, check the official park or preserve website for current maps, closures, hunting seasons and guidelines—especially during winter or mud season.
